Make a physical plan

Get yourself some graph paper, and some tracing paper to put over it.  Draw a scale-model drawing of each yard on a piece of graph paper, blocking out all significant areas such trees and other features that are to stay, and features that’ll be removed.  Then use the tracing paper to sketch in numerous ideas for flower beds and decorative design.  If you want to get fancy, you may also buy software which will allow you to make these plans in 3 dimensions.

The right equipment
