This may seem like a silly question, but if you have just spent a load of money on a very expensive hand-knotted Oriental Rug, the last thing you want to do is drop a few hundred more on a rug pad that no-one will ever see! . But, ask yourself this, if you purchased a new car, would you skip the oil changes? . Certainly not, for we all know that changing of engine oil prolongs the life a car engine and enables us to get the best out it. A rug pad performs a similar function for your rug.
You may be surprised to learn that a rug wears out faster from the side that is in touch with the floor that the other side that’s up. The reason is that the bottom of the rug is all the time being compressed by the hard floor. Actually, the best reason to have durahold rug pads. The idea of having a rug pad is to provide a cushion between the floor and the rug so as to save it from being smashed all the while.
Another reason for a faster wearing out of a hand knotted rug is that it has an open weave. Even if you have a hand knotted rug with a high number of knots per square inch and have difficultly seeing the holes, they are there. Over prolonged use dust particles drop down thru the holes to settle below the carpet. If you have not provided anything below the rug, these dust particles get sandwiched between the bottom of the rug and the floor surface, thus hastening the process of its decay because of increased friction and pressure it bears while it is walked over. A rug pad helps significantly – if you have an open cell pad, it will trap the dirt and hold it away from the rug. If you have a closed cell pad, it holds the dust particles and prevents the rug from being crushed against the tough surface of the floor.
While talking of dirt, a rug pad proves useful in keeping your rug clean. While mainteining rugs, hold the rug off the floor so that air comes beneath it, that makes the vacuum work more efficiently and as a result you get a great looking rug.
