No matter what type of flooring you make a decision to put in your house, it will need some care, particularly if you have children or dogs.  Some types of floors are less difficult to maintain than others.  Carpet can be hard to keep clean since dust and hair and stains can get worked into the carpet, especially if it is a very light color.  Faster options include laminate flooring and hardwood flooring. 

Laminate flooring is available in numerous designs and colours, plenty of which have been created to appear like more natural materials like wood or tile.  The advantage of this type of flooring is that it is a lot less costly than these other choices.  It won’t last quite as long, but with correct care you can keep it looking absolutely fantastic for a long while. 

Caring for a laminate floor is very straightforward.  You wish to wipe up any stains and spills as fast as possible with a damp material.  You also wish to sweep and vacuum the floor regularly to keep it free from dirt that might finish up scratching the floor.  Any furniture should have floor protectors beneath the legs to prevent dents, and any furniture on wheels should be placed on protective mats. 

Hardwood flooring is one of the most popular options available right now, especially since it basically increases the value of your home.  This type of flooring looks beautiful and can last a while.

Maintaining a hardwood floor is similar to caring for a laminate floor.  You want to sweep or use a dust mop on your floor every few days to avoid the dust scratching the finish on your floor.  You also want to clean up spills immediately, and not use water on the floor unless you know it has got a water-resistant coating that’s in good condition.  As with a laminate floor, you also should use protectors beneath furniture to prevent scratching.  One of the benefits of hardwood flooring over laminate though is that you may have your hardwood floor refinished should it begin to look a little too worn. 

Of course, although carpet in general is tougher to keep looking nice, there are things that can be done to make this a relatively easy to care for flooring option too.  You should select a dense carpet with a mix of both loops and cut pile.  Buy a carpet with at least some modification in color or pattern, and get one that isn’t too light or too dark and then stains will be less sure to show.  Make sure that your carpet is treated so that it’s more stain resistant, and clean up any spills or stains immediately so they do not get set in.  Vacuum your floor continually, and from time to time get it cleaned either with a hired machine or by professionals with their own equipment.
